about
This ballad is about the first American dare-devil. Sam Patch was a mill worker in the 1820's who walked away from a steady job to jump off of high places into water - bridges, ship masts, cliffs, etc. He made it to Niagara Falls and jumped into the falls, then to Rochester to jump High Falls. After letting his pet bear proceed him, Patch plunged to his death into the mighty Genesee River while thousands of Rochestarians watched from the banks. A raging drunk, gambler, and vagabond, Patch was the first American to get famous for doing stupid things, the original Jackass.
lyrics
Oh Sammy, Sammy Sammy
Oh what a fate for Sammy
It was 1826 and 3, As we may all remember
Sam Patch jumped the Genesee the 13th of November
The crowd looked on and help its breath
As Sammy plunged down to his death
Oh Sammy, Sammy Sammy
Oh what a fate for Sammy
Although he lived in Jersey state, he roamed all o'er the nation
His leaping appetite to sate, he jumped with jubilation
From bridge and mast he bravely sprang
From our lips his praises sprang
Oh Sammy, Sammy Sammy
Oh what a fate for Sammy
One day he braved Niagara's power, it was not satisfying
"The Genesee I'll next devour," he said, "or die trying!"
He jumped a hundred and a score
It was his last, he'd jump no more
Oh Sammy, Sammy Sammy
Oh what a fate for Sammy
Sam he never saw the light, he left the Earth behind him
Beneath the falls where lost to sight, no mortal man could find him
At the river's mouth he lay
They found him on St. Patrick's Day
